Keith in El Salvador…

He does some strange things, our Canadian, but he’s never boring… His Words…

El Salvador has an aid organization which works overseas on its behalf –“Salvaide”. They have an office in Ottawa and recruited me twice (first time last year for Presidential run-off elections which I had to cancel at last minute due to pneumonia – and again this year for congressional/mayoral and Parliament of the Americas voting. I was part of a delegation of 50+ people from Canada, Sweden, the U.K. Russia, and the US. We spent 8 days in orientations, briefings, meetings with certain officials then monitoring the actual election till I o’clock in the morning. Just stuff that interests me – particularly in helping an emerging democracy after a terribly bloody past of the then civil-war.

So – in no particular order, you see the view behind our “two star” hotel – we were placed there by a Salvadoran charity.  A day trip to a woman’s co-op where they specialize in dying fabric. Nice views taken outside El Sal where we were taken one night for dinner – our only “pay” – we paid our own way – meals and accommodation.  Chaos outside one of three polling stations we were responsible for.  And finally, a pic of the most successful Salvadoran politician – re-elected 9 times.
