And then, to Mont Tremblant…

And then, to Mont Tremblant…

And so we gathered in Quebec’s Mont Tremblant for the big race… Only the top 50 Pros in the world qualify to start. He was drawing to the end of what could only be called a ‘crap season.’  He began with an 8th place in Auckland and then a 2nd in Melbourne – before returning to Boulder, Colorado for the US season – and a steady stream of injuries and – well, crap.  He had looked really good in Boulder – really good – but… Anthea and I were quietly hoping for a top 30…

The opening photo below was taken from his balcony – right in the centre of the village.  (If you missed it – just refresh your browser) The finishing chute runs through the lower foreground – above it, the presentation stage – and behind that – to the left – is the transition area – where I managed to snag a spot right opposite his bike rack – which always impresses him – a lot!  I didn’t have a media pass for this event – so I had to fight the crowds…  No problems – Carla tells me that I do ‘rude’ quite well…

There are manual over-rides on the slideshow. Click on the buttons below the photos, or the arrows to the right and left…

Now – I’m sure that you can all read the chart below – as well as I can – but for those who can’t be bothered – here’s a summary…  After the swim and as they left T1 – he was 1 minute 6 seconds behind the leader (Gomez ESP) – there were also 20 others in that chase pack!  After the bike leg and as they left T2 – he was 2 minutes 36 seconds behind the leader (Sanders CAN) – as were 25 others!

Now – our boy can run a bit – and can normally be relied on to make up a couple of places on the run… but check that line-up – look specifically for Olympians and World Champions…  Well – what did you expect – ferchrissake…

When he passed us on the second run lap – just before we jumped on the chairlift to get down to the finish line – he was in 15th place. We managed to ease our way into a good spot in the finishing chute – just in time to see Javier Gomez (ESP), Jan Frodeno (DEU) and Tim Don (GBR) finish 1-2-3 – and then we counted them down… He finished 13th.  Anthea and I were dead wrong – and proud to be…
