For years, every time I met anyone from Fiji, I would ask them if they had ever heard of Nigel Raihman… We worked together (at the OVC), we argued together and we dreamed together (of flying). Then we lost touch. I’ve only ever been to Fiji once – but I’ve been to North Queensland countless times. I had business there – I had to – it’s the finest marlin fishery in the world! It never occurred to me to ask about Nigel there – but I should have… He’d been there since 1967.
In August last year, Heather Liebenberg (Taylor) contacted me (from Johannesburg) asking about Nigel’s whereabouts and I offered to help. Heather and I began our search on September 18 and, unfortunately it didn’t take us long. A Google search turned up a Funeral Director in Cairns, North Queensland and their obituaries section listed Nigel’s death in May 2011. We have both been in touch with his widow Beverly and his daughter Yashmin, who just last week sent me these photos from her Mother’s collection. Not all the names are known – so we would appreciate help in filling in the gaps.
I will duplicate this post and the attached photographs into The Overseas Visitors Club section (here) so that it doesn’t get swallowed up in the time-line of the blog.
Fly high old friend…
